99 SOUNDS is 99 unframed drawings and recordings done in support of SOUND, Curtis's fourth solo biennial of interactive installation. All drawings are charcoal and graphite, centered on 10"x10" 140lb archival paper. For the first 90 drawings, Curtis visually interpreted sounds she recorded. Before beginning each drawing, she listened to its sound over and over again until she could visualize what the sound looked like. The last 9 drawings are interpretations of music, imagery that has always come to Curtis' mind while listening to these specific works.
