Audience was asked to each uncoil three revolutions of yarn from the left two hooks, and coil what they had uncoiled onto the right two hooks. When left hooks were completely uncoiled, the direction of the yarn was to reverse--and so on. If audience was unsure of the direction the yarn was coiling, they were asked to choose.
